What is your take on this index #? I understand 12 v 4 being zero. 12 v 5 being -1. But I have a hard time understanding the math behind the hard 12 vs 6 being zero on a S17 chart in Appendix A p. 267 in Wong's Professional BJ.
Any insight to this would be helpful!

in an s17 game because if the dealer has an Ace in the hole you lose automatically if you stand, if the dealer has an Ace in the hole in an h17 game you've still got a chance to win thus you wait until a lower negative count to hit your 12 vs the 6.
Most charts I've looked at consider the playing impact to be negligible.
Adjust for the revised House Edge off the top. But I always presumed the strategy changes were minimal on moving H17 to S17.
So even with a precise index of -0.9, it would become 0.
But I agree with you, I think the precise Index for 12 v 6 soft17 is rather -1.3. So in the book it should say -1.

There is indeed, a substantial difference between these two indices, depending on S17 or H17.
According to p. 213 of BJA3, for multi-deck, -1 becomes -3 for H17; for DD, 0 goes to -3; and for SD, +1 goes to -2.
