Fantasy and Reality of 11 seconds

My response to the numerous threads regarding speed of counting is quite simple. I'm skeptical of some people's claims (like Kevin Lewis) because so much of the MIT book was fabricated.

However, there is no question most pros count down a deck in 15 seconds or less. I consistently ripped through in 12-14 and once hit 11. I held the deck in my left hand and flipped over two cards at a time and used Hi-Opt II. So I know it can be done. But a card-counting career is more a marathon than a sprint and the important thing is to be accurate and stay focused during the long grueling trips.

Flipping two at a time is much, much faster than one. Plus it is more realistic since cards are exposed on the green felt in pairs. Give it a try. Just make sure the cards are casino quality and not sticky. I assure you it can be done.

I'm sure there have been many pros over the past few decades that fast. Howard Grossman,for one, was as sharp as anyone in the BJ world before he went to the dark side. Most likely the best CC out there has kept a low profile and is unknown to our community. I crawled out of the woodwork because I wanted to write a book (THE COUNTER) and make a career change. Hence I stepped out from the shadows to become a public figure. But there are countless others who are brilliant, successful, and will never be heard from in public forums like this.

I have never been that fast, but find my speed is sufficient. You can also pull three or four cards and go through the decks that way.

I use the Uston APC and my best time was just over thirteen seconds. But I never flipped the cards, I would just set one card aside turn over the deck and use my left thumb to shove cards into my right. I now use KO and would be a heck of a lot faster with it's simplicity but I lost my watch with the stop watch on it. Do you know where I left it?

This board is an interesting group isn't it. Anyway I almost went to your signing in Eugene, Oregon but something happened and I couldn't make it.

I played a few times with a mature pro who had played on one of Ken Uston's teams. He routinely counted down a deck in under 10 seconds using the APC. I saw it with my own eyes, and it was sick as all hell. Unfortunately, years of nasty swings and vehement casino enmity had turned him into something of a misanthrope and had infected his mind with all sorts of nonsense, like avoiding "clumpy" shoes. Which goes to prove that speed alone does not make a world-class BJ player.

Thanks for clarifying the matter. And thanks for writing that great book. It's definitely worth the time for any potential counters to read it and not only learn how to beat the game but also the more realistic aspects of what could happen if one's not careful.

Are the cards from the hitorstand.net simulation dealt out of a shoe? I thought they were completely random. (like shuffled after every hand)

From an email conversation I had with Neil over a year ago, the normal play is from a normal deck composition, but in the advanced play, the player's hand has an extra rich mix of aces along with the time constraint.

I don't know how many decks are simulated, or when the shuffles occur, but you can go to the site, and contact Neil yourself. He's a likeable chap.

I would have to say it is 'shoe dealt' and not shuffled up every hand, because you have to make decisions with relation to the count.

I recall it being based on the bs charts there, not the count. Be nice if they've added that-trying to check it out, but having a problem getting the site to function.
