Hey all, this is my first post. I’m 19 and just recently got seriously interested in card counting within the last 6 months. I’m currently reading Don’s BJAII and in the book he says that there have been less than 5 times where he has increased his bet after a loss regardless of what happened to the count. I understand the importance of cover plays but my question is how do you determine the effect that these plays have on EV? Do some of the higher end softwares have features that allow you to specify cover plays that you’ll be making? I just feel like with card counters having such a small edge to begin with, playing too conservatively can dent your EV to the point where the game isn’t even worth playing.
A source I rely on for a fair amount of blackjack info is blackjack apprenticeship. A quote of theirs is “The lesson, I suppose, is that there is no perfect cover play, or at least you can’t predict it from one place to the next or from one shift to the next. Whether it is under-betting, over-betting, avoiding certain deviations, or always insuring against a dealer’s ace, every cover play you employ throws a little bit of dirt over your EV. Make sure it doesn’t get buried alive in the process.”.
I’m just trying to get some insight on how to properly balance trying to keep the casino happy and playing the game the right way.
thanks in advance for any responses
