Method to reduce variance.
Assuming people at this site are capable of thinking for themselves and I'm sure criticism will be forthcoming if I write something untenable.
When you lose a max bet, naturally you'll want to recover it. The best way is to place another max bet the next time the count calls for it. If successful, then the problem is solved. If not, then the problem is compounded.
For those who can't weather the storm, you either have to risk another max bet, when called for, or lower your bet ramp to stay within Kelly betting. This route could take a long time to recover.
An alternative would be the following:
After losing a max bet, your focus turns to recovery.
How?
By lowering the value of the loss(max bet)
How?
If you lost a max bet, say 10 units, the next time a max bet is called for you only bet 4 units.
If you win the bet you have lowered the value of the loss down to 6 units, but you have also given up 6 units.(Had you only known it was going to win).
If you lost the bet then you're down 14 units (-10,-4). Here you see you've saved a 6 unit loss.
Still waiting for this losing streak to end you again bet your temporary max bet of 4 units(when called for by the count). Assuming you lose again, you're now down 18 units (-10.-4,-4)when theoretically you'd normally be down 30 units (-10,-10,-10)if you hadn't lower you max bet.
Finally the big moment arrives and you win your temporary max bet of 4 units. The picture now is (-10,-4,-4,+4). You're still technically down two max bets(-10,-4)but the average is only 7 units each.
Because you won your last temporary max bet of 4 units, you now return to your normal max bet of 10 units. Hopefully the losing streak is over.
If you win the next two max bets (10 units each), you have recovered all your max bets and even showed a profit of 6 units.(10+10)-(10+4)
because the two max bets recovered averaged down to 7 units each.
Normal betting would show (-10,-10,-10,+10,+10,+10)= even.
Alternate betting would show (-10,-4,-4,+4,+10,+10)= 6 units up.
In summary:
Without any changes, you would have won and lost the same number of max bets and broken even.
With alternate betting you would also have won and lost the same number of max bet( but not the same value)and come out ahead 6 units with the added benefit of not having ventured into a potential losing streak.
You can make averaging work in your favor. The above numbers are for clarity and demonstration only but the principle should be the same with any numbers you choose.
