don't quit your day job and...
find a game that's worth playing. If all the casinos available to you offer only 6 deck games where the dealer hits soft 17, and they only deal 4 out of 6 of those decks- you might want to take up poker instead. There are many great books out there on card counting such as Stanford Wong's Professional Blackjack and Knock-Out Blackjack by Olaf Vancura and Ken Fuchs. Two very relevant books for today's game are Don Schlesinger's Blackjack Attack and Arnold Snyder's Blackbelt in Blackjack. In particular, Blackjack Attack will help you evaluate the "playability" of the specific games in your area. Blackbelt in Blackjack has the excellent Red7 and Zen counts.
My personal bit of advice is to avoid true count calculations and go with an unbalanced count. They are easier to implement under the gun and there's no loss of performance. Both the KO count and Red7 count are good choices. If you plan on playing hand held games you may want to consider a level 2 count such as Unbalanced Zen 2.
