I know the conventional wisdom is we're supposed to avoid the 5 to 6 single deck bj game like the plague since it starts with about a 1.4% house edge, which is hard to overcome. This is probably why this game isn't discussed much in main stream bj books. I've spent some time on the internet researching this game and I find conflicting advice on various bj forums on how big of a bet spread is required to beat it, and when the player actually has the advantage. Is it at a +2 or +3 count?
I bought CVCX last month to analysis a single deck 5 to 6 game I accidently came across in a casino about 5 hours from my house. This game deals all the way to the last card. The only card not seen is the burn card. Most of the time shuffling occurs in the middle of playing a hand. With the exception of the 5 to 6 rule, this game has very favorable rules, with S17, double on any two cards, das, and rsa. With a 1 to 4 bet spread, CVCX gives it a SCORE of around 100, and a 1 to 15 bet spread gives it a SCORE of appr. 300. Since I'm calculating such a high SCORE for this game, I feel I must be doing something wrong. I'm still learning how to use CVCX.
My broader question is can the single deck 5 to 6 game be beat? Since penetration is so important, does a 100% penetration overcome the 5 to 6 rule? Is it worth side counting aces (which is easy to do in single deck) in this game? At what count does the player start having an advantage in a 5 to 6 game?
I have won playing this game but I know I haven't played it long enough to get in the long run so I might be fooling myself into thinking it can be beaten. I've varied my bet spread from 1 to 15 without any heat. The casino pretty much ignores this game compared to how they watch the DD game. Any help or advice is much appreciated. Thank you!
