I'm watching the world series of blackjack and I'm astonished to see a blind player. How can Regina gain an advantage as a blind player. Does she just count by inference? Or possibly, does her husband count for her? Any ideas? Thanks
she has a spotter that tells her all the cards out and she counts.
She is alot of fun and a joy to be at the table with.

It is utterly useless to count cards in a contest that goes over some thirty rounds. For such few trials the outcome is very much determined by luck.
Your stakes should therebore be a function of the standings of the contestants and not at all of the advantage situation.

There is one more round to play and you're in second place. The leading player has an advanve of 4900$ and the count is heavily negative.
Now what would you rather bet: $5000 or $100 as required by the count?
I know this example is extreme but it hopefully makes my point clear.

The example you give is a special use case. It does not indicate that counting cards in a tournament is "utterly useless."
Certainly, as you say, tournament play many times comes down to betting properly rather than playing propertly, but to exclude counting as a valuable tool in tournamnet play is in my opinion short sighted.
Don't agree with me? That's OK. Read Wong's book on tournament play. Several times there in he describes his decision making process being based both on the count and getting to where he needed to be.
If you mean by skill technical proficiency,I must clearly say no. That's the difference with cash games where you play against the dealer in a never ending battle. In tournament you play against your rivals over a very short period and tactical considerations will take precedence over anything else. If you have to count something here it's not the cards but the chips of all the contestants and size your bets according to the given tournament situation.Towards the end of the game you might not even play BS because when you are behind you will have to try risky doubles in an effort to come back.
In summary, if we speak about skill here, its tactical cleverness and nothing else.

If your gonna play tournaments you better. All the other good players have. Certainly luck plays a part in a short term game. But you had better be "technically proficient" as well as "tactically proficient" if over the long run you want to win your share [ or more than your share :) ]
