I must agree with Ignacio
The example you give is a special use case. It does not indicate that counting cards in a tournament is "utterly useless."
Certainly, as you say, tournament play many times comes down to betting properly rather than playing propertly, but to exclude counting as a valuable tool in tournamnet play is in my opinion short sighted.
Don't agree with me? That's OK. Read Wong's book on tournament play. Several times there in he describes his decision making process being based both on the count and getting to where he needed to be.
