>>>(Wonging in) takes all the fun out of the game.
Depends on how you define "fun". I have fun beating the casinos at their own game.
>>>>It's tedious
Yes, it is tedious. So is counting. So is memorizing indices. So is reading all the posts here and all the AP books. Plopping down and gambling is nice and easy. AP is work.
>>>impossible to implement when the casino is crowded
Trickier, but not impossible. Ploppies frequently lose as the count increases (low cards were played). Sometimes one or two will leave right at wong-in time. (Last night, three ploppies left a table right as the TC hit +2, leaving me with an empty table! Made $1100 on that table, playing only two shoes. That's what I call fun!)
Also, you can always split 10s or double a soft 19 or 20 to piss off the ploppies (I typically don't unless the count calls for it, but it is a possibility). On the second shoe of that table I mentioned in the last parapraph, a ploppy who joined the table after the shuffle split 10s against a six at TC=1. He drew a king and an ace. The dealer had a four for a hole card; she drew a five and a face. I thanked the ploppy for his "wise play" and told him he should split 10s next time he gets them. The other ploppies at the table (they joined in as I was winning, but I did get them to wait for the shuffle at least) didn't fully endorse my opinion on the matter (LOL!), so they left. It was just the ploppy and me for the rest of the shoe. He made four more bonehead plays, all of which caused the dealer to bust (yes, bad plays are as likely to help as they are to hurt)! The plays kept the sightseers from having seats as well.
Alternately, you can play when the casinos are less crowded. I always do this, especially in Vegas.
>>> will cause beef with other players.
I do ask before I sit in on a table. Typically the table will be on a losing run, so they'll often welcome you. Sometimes they don't. If not, have a seat and put out the money when the dealer makes a hand.
As for the ploppies, I try to speak ploppy at the table, if I happen to care what they think. Just think of a reason your play will "help the table". Say stupid things like "I play for myself but I also play for the table". Good manners at tables do help longevity. I try to balance it vs. EV.
>>>It can also create heat with the house.
That can be true. However, ploppies frequently watch games for entertainment and to see if the dealer is "hot", so I do the same. I've never had a problem with it. Needless to say, this is a function of the store and of the layout. It's not always easy to hang around a high-limit area, stare at one or two games, and wong in as soon as a bunch of low cards come out. It is easy to wong in a lower-limit table when you can count down from a distance, and the house is less likely to notice (or care).
>>>Obviously on paper it's the ideal betting strategy, but realistically you may have to make some compromises. I'll always sacrifice some ev for an easier time at the tables.
I sacrifice a little EV for longevity, but not all of it. Even the best 6D has a low SCORE for play-all (unless you found a game with a half-deck or so pen). For a 6D game with a high SCORE (some exist), I personally prefer a play-most strategy (wong out on negative counts as long as you can save your seat).
