1/4 Spread

This is a subject I've brouht up many times on the GC board in the past. I have had many excellant APs make negative comments to me on this subject. More so, then those who agree with me. As a fact, I have been using this spread for months now with very positive results. Not just breaking even as I've been told. Also, I no longer blast monster counts, until the count starts going back down with great results also. Panama Rick if your reading this, I finally understand what you were teaching me. Many greatfull thanks inspite of the way the board lit up with negative responses to this. My average felt time is less than 2 hours at a 10/40 spread. Averaging $150 to $250 per session with a over 80% average win rate.
For all my critics, I challenge you to try it befor you ever deny it again. P/S You might be in for a pleasant surprize.

No I do not think you all are morons. And last time I checked, this site wasn't Correct spelling.com. According to my simple math a 1/4 spread may not equal $10 to $40. I did over estimate my W/L slightly.Sorry, it's only 75%+. I'm not here to troll. That would be disresptful to those here whom I've actually learned from.
Last week I sat at a table next to a friend.(normally leave when another CC is at the same table unless one of us are flat betting). I told him about the 1/4 spread I use.
We played tiny stakes for about 3 hrs. I wonged out from time to time during the session, he did not. During the whole session the worst shoe we (both) had ended in a TC+4 or so. I left the table ahead $320.He left about $450 ahead. We both used a 1/4 spread but not exactly the same unit bets.
When I was very young, I landed a job as an electronic techs helper with no former training. I ended upas an electronic tech for 15 years.I very much remember those years. I had to compete with all these newbies comming and going with there hard earned fancy college degees in electronics. What took them hours to try to fix, I'd fix in 5 minutes. And I am dam sure not lying about that either. No disrespect intended. I've learned from your excellant book, yet I can admit that a lot of it is beyond my intelect. Just like electronics, I use what I can understand and figure the rest out on my own. So if it works, thats what I do. Respectfully submiited. LWC

Thank you for your comment. My intent was not to brag. BJ has changed thru the years, making it much more hard to beat than the days of Ed Thorpe. 1 & 2 decks are a thing of the past. I play mostly 6 deck.

Now cut to the chase: I probally have 1000 hrs of 1/4 or 1/6 spreads. Ihave done better this way than using the Kelly system. No longer do I worry as much regarding ROR. I use a great deal of what the pro's teach, just not Kelly anymore.

When I speak of average 2 hrs on the felt, That doesn't include the time spent on the sidelines using S. Wong's system of time out. As well, I also use the Ills.16 + Fab 4. I just don't use Kelly anymore. I no longer see any great advantage in those super high true counts. After all, who is to say the dealer won't get the 10s also. And I do understand the advantage related to doubles and splits. In my eyes they are to far between for the large bets between these.

My motto is just this. DD and good pen or 6 deck with LS and good pen.

The use of the word 'probably' betrays you. It means that you don't keep records and you therefore have no control of your results.

Apparently your rather small spread isn't even based on the advantage situation which would be imperative for somebody who wants to be an AP.

So why do keep counting the cards?
Sure the dealer will get the high cards also but if you take turns getting Blackjacks, you win.

I keep records, there not to the exact penny or hour. In order to do so, I would have to use a stop watch during all my play. Some sessions I wong out as much as a play. So I try my best to estimate. Yes, At high counts,sooner or latter I'l get more BJs than the dealer. But I don't have a unlimited BR like the casino.
Maybe I'm wrong about easy does it. I use the Ills 16 + fab 4 indices on all my play. Yet in the last 7 in a row super high counts, I've been beat with my highest bets on the felt. And yes playing the correct indices. Yet I just can't stand that type of beating if I use something like a 1/12 spread. I've been able to absord this by using a lower spread. I'm only working with a 7K BR right now. At a $15 to $60 spread, how many 1/12 spreads could I last ? That would be $180 bets thru each super count which I lost 7 times in a row. I think I understand EV and negative swings.

You don't have to estimate. Wonging out is part of the playing time.Just look at your watch when you start the session and again when you cash out.
In my records I always mention the Casino,session time, session result (endcapital - initial capital),aggregate of the year, all time aggregate.
But even if your records are not perfect, you could still tell us. All we need to know is your aggregate playing time and the current standing.

Bad beats like this are part of the game. If you cannot take this you are in the wrong trade.

Now I understand. Obviously you are still 3k down on your whole playing career.
Of course it's not easy to play properly to a bankroll of merely 7k but since it is apparently renewable I would treat it as a 10k bankroll and play according to the advices of Don S. in BJA.
In no case would I limit myself to a max bet of 60$. Your win rate will be insufficient and expenses will eat you up.
Since you have a regular income being wiped out would only be a small tragedy. So go for it!

I've lowered my spread and my BR is on the up swing. What kind of BR would you suggest if I were to up my spread from $15/$60 to $15/$120 or $15/$180? I don't see any AP on this with a mere 7K BR.

I'm doing better with the 1/4 spread than I ever did with a 1/8 spread. Yet it is a slow grind. I've had other APs tell me I can win at a 1/4 spread, yet not all. What I'm seeing makes me believe it. Yet like I said, a slow grind.

Now my main question. Considering I've always enjoyed the game; Would you continue at the slight EV and build on it, Or would you take a time out and return only when your BR can suffice a 1/12 spread. And what would be the proper BR to start at a 1/12 spread of $15/$180?

Why stop there? Experiment with 1/5. Quantify the optimal reduction.

This game is hard.

now is related to treating 7K like 10K. Would I be correct that the proper spread for 10K BR would be 1/10. I'm not a wealthy man when it comes to money. I can absorb small bad beats right now only. Another issue; I'm temporarily limited to 2 local playable stores. And both of them sweat even 1/6 spreads. This issue will change latter this year. But right now I'm stuck due to family issues. Thats how I learned to make the best out of these small spreads. Thats why my 2nd go at this is creating positive net income. Little travel expenses.

I'm asking your thoughts now ; Note, I'm not real new to this brutal game that I enjoy. My new income only goes up $500 per month for this endeaver I'm seeking. I already know your a pro at this/ details not needed. Plus your country has the best health care system in the world.

Cut to the chase: I'm not very comfortable with a 1/10 spread with a BR of 7K. Should I just take a 6 month time out and hit the books more. (no way my 2 stores will tolerate a 1/10 spread very long). Or should I just carry on for now with maybe a 1/6 spread, Max I can get away with. Only because I've perfected the art of ratholing.

Sure the dealer will get as many 10s as you. He will get as many BJs as you too. But you get paid 3-2 for a BJ the dealer doesn't. You will get as many busting 10s as the dealer too right? Not exactly. The dealer has to hit on 16, you don't. The dealer will get that 10 to win his double down too, right? Except the dealer can't double down. You're trying to use your intuition to analyze a game that's been analyzed by great math minds. If you want to win you need to just do what they say, not try to out-analyze them. You look at it as new vs. old. Something is not good because its new and something is not bad because its old. It might be just new, not new and good.
