Shuffle tracking is a way to get an edge at blackjack. It involves remembering where excess large or small cards are placed in the discard pile, using that information to predict where excess large or small cards end up after the next shuffle, and cutting in such as way as to profit from the information. The Blackjack Shuffle Tracker's Cookbook explains how to do it.
There are two nice things about shuffle tracking. Shuffle tracking yields an edge to those who are good at it. Unlike card counting, shuffle tracking is difficult to detect, reducing the chance of you being identified as an advantage player.
Snyder explains the skills you need to build to be a successful shuffle tracker. He provides rules of thumb you can use to determine whether your skills are sufficient to get an edge tracking shuffles in a casino. For example, one necessary skill is knowing how many cards are in the discard tray. If you think the tray has about 118 cards and there actually are 127, you need more practice before you are ready to take on a casino as a shuffle tracker. Snyder provides drills you can use to hone those necessary skills.
Before this new book appeared, Snyder already had written major works on shuffle tracking. He published a three-part series on shuffle tracking in his magazine Blackjack Forum in late 1994 and early 1995, and he discussed shuffle tracking on pages 142-171 of his 1998 book Blackbelt in Blackjack, which is out of print. Major parts of those previous works are included in The Blackjack Shuffle Tracker's Cookbook. Snyder identifies which material is reprinted and which is new, so if you have already read Snyder's earlier material on shuffle tracking you can skip over the parts of the new book that you have already read. Only part of the new book is material that has already been published once or twice; there is much new material as well.
Here is a quote from page 51 of The Blackjack Shuffle Tracker's Cookbook. You can see for yourself how easy Snyder's material is to understand: "...many trackers prefer 'No Mid-Shoe Entry' games, which allow them to sit down and track an entire shoe without betting! ... Tracking teams also often prefer no mid-shoe entry games because they can always call in the big player at the top of a shoe with no suspicions aroused. If the table is full, the tracker can decide to leave just as the big player arrives, freeing his own seat."
Caution: Shuffle tracking is difficult to do. Building the necessary skills takes time. Not everybody can do it -- not everybody is capable of learning to know how many cards are in the discard tray. But for those who have the ability and want to invest the time to learn how to track shuffles, The Blackjack Shuffle Tracker's Cookbook provides the recipe.
